(tipical) taxi driver in Bangkok, each shows its own banknotes' collection |
Not that after the Egyptian experience I was willing so much to
deal with any taxi driver in the world,
but Thai ones are not so bad
after you get how it works.
Airport-Bangkok : right after the exit there are some info desks where they
will tell you the fair price to pay for the address you have to reach
and they will assign you to a cab.
It shouldn't be more than 500 bath, including the highway fee.
Bangkok : it's better to ask for the meter as soon as you get in the cab,
later on things get always less clear and,
although all the drivers we met were extremely friendly
I don't like the feeling of being fooled.
Tuc-tuc : it is certainly the best and funniest way to explore Bangkok
and it will turn the worst traffic jam into a visit of the city
(let apart the amount of smog that will stick to your skin)

but do not accept the first price they will tell you,
especially when you see that they will accept a 40% cut
without much resentment.
If you accept to do one stop (meaning they will take you somewhere
were they get paid to bring tourists at, like shops or bars) the price
will decrease a lot, but most of the times the difference in price is not worth the
loss of time..

Islands : when you leave the city the system changes and suddenly
the intuitive way of setting prices is no longer per ride but...per person.
At first we were suspicious, but since it's the law here be ready to pay
what was the total price in Bangkok...each!
Especially when it comes to taxi boats,
rides are about 200 bath each min.
Thai drivers are not really familiar with english, but to try to set a conversation
is fun and will add several smiles to your experience
(ps anyways, it is better to know your destination
instead of trying to ask directions to the cab driver, although
they are very kind, it is quite hard to go blind.)
